Field Elementary School8

This is our first year at Field and my son is in Kindergarten and we have been very pleased. We love his teacher and he was reading at a 1st Grade level within the first few months of school! The school is very good at challenging their students that need it. Beyond that, Field has some really great teachers, the office staff treats you like family and the Principal is open, honest and amenable to reasonable requests. Granted, this school is overlooked by zoned families for the more "desirable" schools in the neighborhood (which are pretty much impossible to get into). Field's test scores are very comparable to those other schools and has an active community organization and PTO that are making great strides to increase awareness of this hidden gem. Is it perfect? No. But what school is? Luckily the administration listens to parents and strives to make it a neighborhood school for everyone. I have no doubt it WILL be the next school of choice in the Heights.

The principal is readily available and open to new ideas and suggestions. The staff is caring and nurturing and while the teachers seem to be overwhelmed sometimes (this is, unfortunately, the case everywhere) they are competent and are academically on par with the more sought-after schools in the area (Harvard or Travis). I agree, HISD should give more support for pick-up and drop-off jams. I am glad that there are involved parents in the PTO and the community organization Friends of Field that are trying to improve the school. Good enrichment activities for kids--Writers in Schools, Recipe for Success, an after school Arts program, an amazing music teacher and Idea Lab is available after school.

The principal dose not seem to be involved in the day to day tasks. Teacher's seem to be overwhelmed, and very un organized. Pickup and drop off of children is dangerous, I'm surprised no one has been hurt yet.
